Job Seeker’s Tip: References Available Upon Request
Wednesday, September 30, 2009
“References Available Upon Request”. It seems to be almost as much of a resume staple as Education or Career Summary. As a company who reads a lot of resumes, sometimes we’re looking for more of a challenge. Perhaps “References Available Over My Dead Body” or “References Available…but It’ll cost ya”.
A strong list of professional references can put a marginal candidate over the top, so be selective in the individuals whom you choose. An endorsement from your CEO or CFO carries more weight in the eye of many prospective employers than the kind words of a half-dozen peers or subordinates. When formulating a list of references, it is wise to start thinking top-down.
It also helps for an employer to know ahead of time in what capacity you worked with these individuals. Try to insert phrases like “direct supervisor” or “Vice President of Baltimore Region” in order to clarify how your role was related to that of the person listed.
Many candidates like to include a few “personal references” just for good measure. In the eyes of a lot of employers, these do not hold much relevance. While it is good to know that your next-door neighbor or your brother-in-law thinks highly of you, decision makers are more concerned with how you have helped past employers make money, save money or be more efficient.
Finally, be sure to make those you list aware that they will be receiving calls. Giving them adequate time to prepare their thoughts on you is a necessary courtesy, and you do not want your references being caught off-guard.
